What is IP Telephony?

IP Telephony is the implementation of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology to deliver telephone calls over a data network, such as your corporate network or the Internet.

Traditionally telephone calls have been carried on their own network. Inside companies, this is typically a PABX system, a large machine typically costing of thousands of dollars. A large chunk of cables with cables connect the PABX to phones in the building. In order to connect them to the public switched telephone network (PSTN), or to other company sites, dedicated telephone lines are used. These lines are often expensive and call charges apply.

Typical broadband connection that can take advantage of IP Telephoney includes as wireless, fibre optics and ADSL.
